“Traveling on my own was such an eye-opening experience! I was traveling in Italy with my family but I had a few more weeks off before starting with HIHO so I decided to change my flight to explore Germany and Austria on my own. I learned a lesson in flexibility as I would get on a bus or train to the next city and search for accommodations and sights to see on the way. I’m not spontaneous by nature but I learned to be open to suggestions and make plans based on the people and places I encountered.

One of the best things about traveling alone was that I could truly do whatever I wanted! If I was tired and just felt like sitting at a cafe to read and people watch, I didn’t have to convince someone else to skip the museum tour. I checked a few things off my bucket list such as seeing the house from The Sound of Music and visiting the Austrian Alps. I was truly blown away by the generosity and patience of the people I encountered when I was lost or needed help. It was a great reminder for me to always be kind and patient when strangers ask for help or directions.

While traveling is fun and exciting, it can be stressful at times! Before leaving, I make an excessive number of lists but I almost always forget something. I’ve learned that I can do my best to prepare for every scenario but a trip almost never goes according to the original plan. Misplacing a passport, missing a train, losing luggage and weather delays have all altered my traveling plans at one time or another. However, my dad always reminds me that the unexpected hurdles and experiences of traveling are all a part of the journey- also known as memories. Sometimes the alternative plan turns to be better than what we had in mind.”
