World Changer, Mindful Luxury

Kayla Childress has been in the spa industry for over 30 years and recently launched her own business, Mindful Luxury, in North Carolina. With the job title, “World Changer,” it’s hard to imagine Kayla would have much time for anything else but work. Yet, she manages to juggle so much more every day. Living in Charlotte, North Carolina, she’s a big Carolina Panthers football fan, and also roots for UNC Chapel Hill basketball. She enjoys spinning, anything HGTV, and her guilty pleasures include wine and chocolate. She loves spending her spare time with her daughter, Grace, and faithful rescue pup, Cosmo.

Her spa journey started when she was 14, when she landed her first gig answering phones for a salon. “Planting myself at 14 years old into the beauty industry allowed me to get where I am today. Although I was hired to just answer phones, I did everything from dusting shelves, stocking retail, sweeping floors, folding towels and everything in between. It truly helped form my hard-work ethic. My biggest takeaway from that first job was that hard work pays off because the owner of that salon would give me cash rewards, time off and free product just because I gave it my all. I truly try to do the same today.”

That work ethic helped push Kayla to reach her position today at Mindful Luxury. “Throughout high school and college I worked in various salons and beauty stores. After graduation, I took a management position with one of the top salons in Atlanta and found it was a career I absolutely loved! Five years later, I set my sights on the next horizon, New York City. I sold what little I had and moved to The Big Apple where I landed a management position at Frederic Fekkai, which was located at Bergdorf Goodman at the time. My role there allowed me to do many things, but the one aspect that I fell in love with was helping to launch Fekkai's first ten haircare products. From there, the product and manufacturing side of the business captured my heart and soul.”

Kayla is a success story, eventually working for companies like ZENTS, Dr. Dennis Gross and SpaRitual before founding her own company, Mindful Luxury. Despite all of this success, when asked what she is most proud of, she immediately shines the spotlight on Grace, her daughter. Raising a child with a sweet and caring soul, who embodies a true love for the world, is something Kayla cares most about.
