Cindi Flanagan

It’s easy to talk yourself out of taking a risk like that but I kept on getting signs that this was meant to be.
I remodeled it, created a journey and experience for clients, updated technologically, and built a solid team with a dynamic spa director who shared my vision.

Owner, Abundant Health Day Spa

Seek and you will find: no five words better sum up the entrepreneurial spirit of ISPA members. Those might not have been the exact words that were going through Cindi Flanagan’s head three years ago when she left North Carolina and returned to Smyrna Beach, Florida, 30 years after leaving the town she grew up in. But she knew it was time to come home and found a way. “I was returning home after living all over the country most of my adult life. Not at a stage in my life to retire, but certainly looking for something that I could fully commit myself to. And luckily for me, there was a spa for sale.”

For Cindi, owning a spa was a lifetime’s dream. Even if she didn’t know it. She spent most of her working life as an accountant in the wellness and exercise industry, not because she enjoyed being an accountant but because she wanted to be as regular a customer as possible. Very sensible.

“I have always loved being pampered, and working in the industry was a great way to spend a little and get a lot! Funnily enough I was inspired by the very few people I had come across in the industry that weren’t inspiring. To be clear, there aren’t many of them! But I always thought if they can operate profitable spa businesses then what’s stopping me? So as soon as I saw the spa for sale in my home town, I knew I had to go for it.”

Like the prodigal son, this particular spa had fallen on hard times. Existing rather than thriving, in a place where spa treatments should be in demand all year around. It was floundering, needed money spent on it, and it needed some kind of vision. “I remodeled it, created a journey and experience for clients, updated technologically, and built a solid team with a dynamic spa director who shared my vision. We are now a beautiful, award-winning boutique day spa and an integral part of our community.”

For Cindi, chance played a big role in Abundant Health Day Spa – and not just in finding it for sale when she was in the market to buy. Cindi knew that she needed an amazing Spa Director, and when fate stepped in and her future spa director walked through the door unannounced just weeks after the spa purchase, they clicked instantly. “I couldn’t live without her. Sometimes it feels like we share the same brain.” But there is more to it than chance. After all, you have to buy a ticket to win the lottery.

“It’s easy to talk yourself out of taking a risk like that but I kept on getting signs that this was meant to be. If you’re passionate about what you’re doing, with some hard work other things will fall into place.” That doesn’t mean that running any business is easy, but without that passion it’s much less likely to work. That passion for spa is probably why our industry is so full of businesses that do work.
