For Ginger McLean, Chief Operating Officer at the Bell Tower Salon, Spa, Shop, and Café in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, life has always been an adventure. The youngest of five, her older siblings dragged her along in whatever mischief they were getting in to. “Maybe we were just lucky to grow up when kids could just be kids and weren’t glued to computer screens. But going on adventures is something that I’ve never tired of or wanted to stop.”

Her son and nieces have inherited that same lust for adventure. Her son captains a yacht, currently in the Phoenix Islands in the South Pacific, which Ginger didn’t know existed until learning about the voyage. Nothing to be ashamed of. “It doesn’t worry me that he is doing something very different, thousands of miles off the beaten track. I would probably have been surprised if he had decided to take a ‘normal’ job after college. I can’t image him stuck behind a desk.”

Treating life as one big adventure – she recently took family skydiving in Florida and returned with tattoos – isn’t just about the adventures themselves. For Ginger it has also been a way to cope with the loss of loved ones. “Over the years I’ve lost both of my parents, my two brothers, brother-in-law, and a dear friend. Being grateful for everything in life, grabbing every moment and trying to squeeze the most out of life has helped me cope.”

Getting into the spa world was an adventure in itself. Even though she graduated with a degree in Recreational Management, she started out as a banker, then became a teaching assistant for hearing impaired students, while also owning a painting and decorating business. They all brought their own unique challenges and joys, but for Ginger (and us!) nothing beats being in the spa world.

“I have been very fortunate in my career and have worked for big companies, and I now work with a small independent company. All have been a blessing.” Ginger spent eight years working for two of the world’s largest brands – four years at Hershey Entertainment and four years at Walt Disney World. “I used to say I worked for chocolate while with Hershey and that I was paid in cheese at Disney. Not that Disney is cheesy, but my boss was a mouse, after all! Disney was an incredible experience. Every day I was surrounded by wonder and joy, and by colleagues who were full of energy. We truly did create magic every day, and we celebrated that magic every day too.”

Just like life, the spa world is an adventure and always evolving. That’s what Ginger loves most about it, and we couldn’t agree more. Even though it has been around for hundreds, thousands of years, it’s still changing and developing, bringing together amazing people, creating incredible inner and outer beauty, and giving people renewed belief that health and wellness are attainable at any age. Quite the adventure.
