Mary Bemis & Stephen Kiesling

We met at the 2004 ISPA Conference & Expo and became friends. Four years later, we actually met at a spa - and the rest is history.
Their spark started from a shared love of magazines, publishing and the spa industry.

Editorial Director for Insiders Guide to Spas and Editor In Chief of Spirituality & Health magazine

One can’t help but believe in fate in this couple’s case. Mary Bemis, Editorial Director for Insider’s Guide to Spas and Stephen Kiesling, Editor in Chief of Spirituality & Health magazine met at the 2004 ISPA Conference & Expo. The spark started from a shared love of magazines, publishing and the spa industry, but didn’t end there. As this power couple would find out, they were meant for each other.

Stephen: “I bought a riverfront property in 2000, to build a world-class slalom course, and I eventually moved into an old tin singlewide that was on the property. In honor of Mary’s arrival, I added a wall of French doors on the riverside, and a reclaimed claw-foot tub. And for a few years, the two of us produced two national print magazines out of what became our beloved "Tin Can." Meanwhile, we worked with the entire alphabet of regulatory agencies to design the white water park—and also to get permits to build our dream house—a boathouse/barn. Downstairs is the boathouse, upstairs is primarily designed for Mary’s new six-foot cast-iron claw-foot slipper tub. Mary was the first woman I met who didn’t say, ‘Call me back when you build your house.’”

Mary: “I left New York City, where I was born, and where I spent the majority of my life, for the wilds of Oregon. In New York, I lived on the banks of the Hudson River. Now, in Oregon, I live on the banks of the Rogue River. I traded in my pointy-toed pumps for a pair of Keen's . . . It has been an adventure.”
