Garrett Mersberger

I’ve been a golfer most of my life and I love being part of an industry that has allowed me to play and stay in so many fantastic places.
Wisconsin has always been home...like all Wisconsinites, we love family, the outdoors, and of course the Green Bay Packers.

Director, Kohler Waters Spa & Development

Garrett Mersberger, Director at Kohler Waters Spa (and at ISPA) has lived in two different countries, five different states, and eleven different cities, but has ended up living about four miles away from the town where he was born. “Wisconsin has always been home. My wife was born in the same town as me, and like all Wisconsinites we love family, the outdoors and of course the Green Bay Packers. So when the opportunity to return came we knew it was what we wanted.”

The other country Garrett lived in was a little different to Wisconsin.  He spent his teens in the Chinese city of Tianjin. “This was the early 1990s. It wasn’t westernized at all. There were no grocery stores, you’d see oxen walking down the street. I went to a western school that had 26 kids covering kindergarten to the 12th grade! I was a tall, blonde, lanky kid, and in a city of 8 million people I was a complete novelty.”

One of the benefits of living abroad is that Garrett still speaks fluent – if slightly rusty – Mandarin, something that comes in handy when Kohler has guests from China. “When I talk in their own language, their faces go from confusion to delight. Those moments are very special, although like anyone who doesn’t speak it often I always wonder how it’s going to come out!”

For an industry that (almost) goes hand in hand with golf, at least on the resort side, Garrett is extremely passionate about both spa and golf. “I’ve been a golfer most of my life and I love being part of an industry that has allowed me to play and stay in so many fantastic places. I’ve been to Scotland more times than I can count and played whenever I could. I love that when I stand on the tee I get exactly the same challenge as Tiger Woods. It’s what makes golf unique… it’s not like I can play Roger Federer at tennis. In golf the opponent is the same for everyone – the course.”

Garrett may be one of the few golfers in the spa world, but like so many of us he is inspired by our industry’s passion, compassion, and leadership. “One of the reasons I went into spa was I knew Jean Kolb, a fellow Kohler native and ISPA director.  Jean was and is an inspiration to so many people.” Maybe there was a little more to going home than just the Packers…
