Aspira the Spa, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin

Can you start with the basics please. Tell us a little about Aspira the Spa?

We’re a day and resort spa located on the shores of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, about an hour north of Milwaukee and about an hour south of Green Bay. Lake Michigan is a short distance to the east. That makes us the perfect stopover spot between the two major cities in our state, and a great place to stop if you’re visiting the lake. A lot of our customers also make the easy journey up from Chicago, which is less than three hours away. People outside the Midwest of the US might assume that Wisconsin is a snow-bound frontier, but in fact this is one of the most spa-centric and forward-thinking parts of the country.

How large are your facilities and how many treatments do you offer?

We have about 20,000 square feet of spa, enough space to allow us to offer over 100 different spa treatments, all handled by 45 full and part-time staff. Many of our customers are local, but as I have said, we also serve a large number of people that visit Wisconsin all year round. So we have the best of both worlds, local and visiting spa guests, many of whom come back to see us whenever they are close by.

What makes Aspira different?

We offer our customers a unique experience, and we are always working on making that experience more dynamic. Even though all spas offer treatments that improve our physical lives, spa is really all about the total experience. We focus on delivering a signature Aspira Spa experience based on our philosophy of holistic authenticity and our wellness and healing mission. Our philosophy includes feng shui principles used in the design of our signature spaces within the spa, such as the Meditation Sanctuary, the Spa Café, Spa Library and the indoor and outdoor whirlpools and lounges. Our philosophy and mission enrich the entire Aspira experience.

Do those principles extend beyond feng shui and the design of your spa spaces?

Everything we do and create is done with those principles in mind. We use natural materials throughout the spa, sprinkled with artifacts from the East and West, a reminder of the blend of healing modalities used as the basis for Aspira’s menu of services.

Wisconsin has a rich Native American history. How does Aspira reflect and respect those traditions?

Elkhart Lake was once considered sacred by the three Native American tribes that lived on its shores, the Menoninee, the Ojibwa and the Potowotamie, so our signature services honor their healing traditions and local plants and herbs like chamomile, elderberry, and cedar. We grow them organically on our property or harvest them as they grow wild for use in our signature services. We believe that the depth of the Aspira experience and the focus on its mission sets Aspira apart from other spas.

What about the future? Where do you see Aspira going, and how can you achieve your plans?

It’s always easier to plan for the future than it is to create the conditions necessary for those plans to come about. We have been very fortunate – we have always had a great team, most of whom have been with us for many years, just like many of our spa guests. When you have that kind of continuity among staff and guests you can make plans in the knowledge that, barring catastrophe, you can make them real. So those conditions have resulted in plans to expand our menu of services, incorporating additional indigenous healing modalities such as Aspira’s new massage called “The Grandfathers”, the name Native Americans give the stones used in healing and ceremony. In addition, Aspira has plans to offer acupuncture and acupressure services, following its mission of wellness and healing. We are very proud of our past but we are even more excited about Aspira’s future.
